<p>It is really good &#038; I highly recommend it for you, well if you want to survive in the future or want to change your world, no matter if you define world as the whole world or just your life.</p>
<p>There are all kinds of topics I took notes on during the first listen from scarsity, value, influance, and a great explanation of  manafestos.</p>

<p>On January 11th, 2011 I had a self-imposed deadline. I was going to start a podcast where I would share the great nuggets of gold that I had found and collected over time. For years I have gathered quotations, listened to &amp; shared podcasts, books, and other media.That was the day I determined to be more intentional &amp; open in sharing</p>
<p>As of that morning I did not have a plan in place, I had not even settled on a name, but I wanted the start date to be 2011-01-11 or 01-11-11 or 11-01-11 or 01-11-2011.</p>
<p>An idea came to me of calling the clips, quotations, and ideas cubes, because it was a little more interesting than blocks, and knew that I wanted the episodes to be something you could build upon. The domain name was secured, a site thrown up, and <a href="http://www.startingcube.com/cube0001-seed-to-tree/">the first episode was made &amp; released</a>.</p>
<p>I knew I needed to just start, I was even thinking about a pattern for designing websites I had written on before &amp; I knew that I had previously made podcast episodes similar to what StartingCube was in the past … but … never really released them.</p>
<h3>The Big Two</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.startingcube.com/cube50-how-to-change/"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-2398 alignright" title="StartingCube50 - How to Change" src="http://www.jonathannation.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/StartingCube50-How-to-Change-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>There have been two episodes that have stuck with me the most, 50 and 25.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.startingcube.com/cube25-how-to-succeed/">StartingCube 50 &#8211; How to Change</a> &#8211; highlights some core reasons why I do StartingCube:<br />
- promote ideas I desire to be spread around<br />
- promote people, media, and products I want to succeed</p>
<p>Of the people who’s work has been shared on StartingCube, not everything they do I agree with, but they do enough good work that I want to continue.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.startingcube.com/cube25-how-to-succeed/">StartingCube 25 &#8211; How to Succeed</a> is not the most downloaded of all time, but considering it was released several months into doing StartingCube, it’s interesting how many people have and continue to download it. That episode talks about the steps a person needs to take to achieve their dreams. With that, I view a regular diet of StartingCube as fitting the bill.</p>

<h3>Looking Forward</h3>
<p>The second episode released was a recall of a story that <a href="http://www.startingcube.com/cube0002-the-billionaire-to-the-millionaire/">Dave Ramsey told about the wise advice a billionaire</a> shared with him. As I move forward with StartingCube, my intention is to keep moving forward &amp; improving a little at a time.</p>
<p>Based on <a href="http://www.allynation.com/find-the-best-website-for-you/">the original “how to find the best website for you” plan</a>, I could work a site redesign, but at this point smaller improvements, like an updated About page, is more important move.</p>
<p>The style of episodes have also shifted a little, with shorter clips we are going to look to include an additional clip or quotation. Build upon a theme in each episode. We try to keep them short so that it just sparks a flame that the audience can take and build upon or let it go out. I don’t want StartingCube to lead people a long way each episode and finding a balance there is important.</p>

<p>And it just hit me &#8230; just in time, about to be day 2.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been wanting to figure out <a href="http://codex.wordpress.org/Post_Formats">WordPress Post Formats</a> &amp; find better ways of using them then the crap I see.</p>
<p>The other day I did some searches for advanced Post Formats techniques &#8230; nothing. All searches I did, in multiple routs, ended up with either &#8220;how to enable&#8221; or pretty much the exact same way of doing it.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This month: July 2011 : I am going to spend time every day working with them, learning them, and figuring out some cool ways to use them, so that the end result is that JonathanNation.com will do everything I would normally do on <a href="http://jonathannation.com/twitter">twitter</a>, <a href="http://jonathannation.com/facebook">facebook</a>, or other social media sites.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll still use social media sites simply because I believe in reaching people where they are, but the hub, my personal hub, will be here.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>From there, we shall see what happens. Some of the updates will be here, some on <a href="http://AllyNation.com">AllyNation</a>. All in all, at the end of July I&#8217;ll know more &amp; should have a much improved website.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This  morning <a href="http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2011/05/whats-high-school-for.html">Seth Godin asks the question “What’s High School for?”</a> and then  proceeds to give some ideas of what it can teach students.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-2231" href="http://www.jonathannation.com/2011/how-boy-scout-programs-do-the-job-of-high-schools/bsavshs/"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2231" title="BSA vs HS" src="http://www.jonathannation.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/BSAvsHS-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a><br />
As I read the list, my thoughts were two fold:<br />
- I indirectly learned most of that while in a government school system, but that is not what they were intending<br />
- The Boy Scouts of America: Boy Scout Troop &amp; Order of the Arrow  programs seem to be more intentional at developing those skills in  individuals</p>
<p>for instance:<br />
(some of Seth&#8217;s points that I learned in BSA programs)</p>
<ul>
<li>How to focus intently on a problem until it&#8217;s solved.</li>
<li>The benefit of postponing short-term satisfaction in exchange for long-term success.</li>
<li>The power of being able to lead groups of peers without receiving clear delegated authority.</li>
<li>How to persuasively present ideas in multiple forms, especially in writing and before a group.</li>
<li>Project management. Self-management and the management of ideas, projects and people.</li>
<li>An insatiable desire (and the ability) to learn more. Forever.</li>
<li>Most  of all, the self-reliance that comes from understanding that relentless  hard work can be applied to solve problems worth solving.</li>
</ul>
<p>The  reason that these elements are so well taught in the BSA programs is  that they are designed to set the youth (and really adults) in a safe  situation, but outside their comfort zone.</p>
<p>They provide a framework, or sandbox &amp; some systems of safety.</p>
<p>Then lots of freedom.</p>
<p>One  thing that could improve the different BSA programs, and similar organizations, is to reminded the adult supervision,  and maybe leaders too, of those indirect lessons that are learned through the course of unscripted events &amp; what can seem like  chaos.</p>
<p>As to Seth’s other points:</p>
<ul>
<li>How to read critically.</li>
<li>An understanding of the extraordinary power of the scientific method, in just about any situation or endeavor.</li>
<li>Personal finance. Understanding the truth about money and debt and leverage.</li>
</ul>
<p>They  can be learned in the BSA, and other, settings. That was just not  exactly my experience. A difference is some teacher needs  to be involved and guide the student to these  elements. It’s harder for someone to learn to critically read, or to use  the scientific method out of chaos.</p>
<h3>Past High School</h3>
<p>The  skills listed are important for big wins in a person’s life, but many  don’t learn the skills or develop the taste while in High School.</p>
<p>If you are past your High School years, there is hope.</p>
<p>The  biggest thing you have to do is be intentional in your education &amp;  gathering of experience. The biggest suggestion I have is to find a  mentor, someone to learn from, and a group to be involved with. The  mentor may or may not be involved with the group. There might also  be advantages to being involved with two rather different groups (one  with the mentor, one without).</p>
<p>For  some the key will be action. For others it will be learning from  others, in person or through media (books, websites, podcasts, etc).  Whatever is natural for you, try to add the opposite to your life.</p>

<p>I grew up playing soccer. It&#8217;s an ok sport to play, but being outside the game really depends on the atmosphere. World Cup Soccer can be fun, live games &#8230; well, lets just say that today I saw some video on ESPN that caused me to look up more online &amp; now I want to make the trip to Portland to see the Timbers play.</p>
<p>First thing that struck me was the crowd singing the national anthem:<br />

<p>In looking for videos and such, I watched some more. Saw <a href="http://youtu.be/b3EOYViYnwI?hd=1">a tour of the stadium with Portland Mayor Sam Adams</a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Timbers">read a little of the history of the franchise</a>.</p>
<p>The Timbers Army looks like they make these games very fun. I hope the crowd continues to be large, even if they don&#8217;t sing the National Anthem every game, maybe on weekends &amp; other special games.</p>

<p>The slab tradition has been around a long time.</p>

<p>Tonight as I play video games I have been listening to some of their shows, starting with the most recent &amp; going into the past.</p>

<p>Neither trying nor drifting are very effective in [achieving the big goals]. A better image the sailboat, in  which if it moves at all, it&#8217;s a gift of the wind. We can&#8217;t control the  wind, but a good sailor discerns where the wind is blowing and adjusts  the sails accordingly.</p>

<p>A couple days ago I stumbled across a link to <a href="http://Newsboys.com/remix">Newsboys.com/remix</a><br />

<p>Within an hour I had:</p>
<ul>
<li>downloaded all the tracks</li>
<li>loaded up into an audio editor</li>
<li>familiarized myself with the sound on each track</li>
<li>came up with a vision &#8211; start with the lead vocal and add in a minimum audio, but still keep a good beat</li>
<li>generated my first draft</li>
</ul>
<p>At that point, I really had not listened to the original song, at least not in a few months since my last Zune Pass ran out.</p>
<p>Thursday morning, I upload the song to the contest (this was after a quick email with Greg Seneff, a copyright lawyer, about the rules).</p>
<p>I then listened to both my remix &amp; one of the ones they provided &amp; realized I could improve.</p>
<p>The interments were too low, adding in the female background vocals in one or two parts would add a lot, and some fading of tracks a couple places.</p>
<p>In the end, I came up with this: <a href="http://www.nation.fm/wbmlsm2">Way Beyond Myself &#8211; Less is More Nation 2</a></p>

<p>As season one went on, it got better and better, with episode 23 &#8211; Modern Warfare  [ <a href="http://www.hulu.com/watch/147571/community-modern-warfare">watch it</a> ] being one of the best half hours of TV I have ever seen.</p>
<p>I do wonder if it is as good without the other 22 episodes to build up (my guess is not).  If you&#8217;ve not seen any, you can see the last <a href="http://www.hulu.com/search?query=Community&amp;st=0">5 shows on Hulu</a>, or <a href="http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Community-Season-1/70123993">start from the beginning with Netflix</a>, or just <a href="http://nation.fm/y3x5j6">order it from amazon</a> since Season 1 DVDs will be released Tuesday.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.nbc.com/community/">Season 2 starts off Thursday the 23rd of September</a>.</p>
<p>Looks like we might get <a href="http://www.nbc.com/community/photos/betty-white/5961#item=135748">Betty White shooting someone with a crossbow</a>.</p>
<p>My DVR is already set to record.</p>

<p>Today he has a great post in a series titled <a href="http://www.avc.com/a_vc/mba-mondays/">MBA Mondays</a> about <a href="http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2010/08/what-a-ceo-does.html">the role of a CEO</a>.</p>
<p>It tells of the basic criteria that he evaluates CEOs on:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;A  CEO does only three things. Sets the overall vision and strategy of the  company and communicates it to all stakeholders. Recruits, hires, and  retains the very best talent for the company. Makes sure there is always  enough cash in the bank.&#8221;</em></p></blockquote>
<p>I tried to shorten that and not lose any meaning, with no great success.</p>
<p>Any organization will falter or fail if someone does not fulfill those three tasks, and they really are keys to success.</p>
<p>Another way to look at it is:</p>
<ul>
<li> promote where we are going &#8211; general direction</li>
<li>get the right people on the bus</li>
<li>make sure the bus does not run out of gas</li>
</ul>
<p>As far as “all the other stuff that a CEO could do” &#8230; that is <a href="http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2010/08/what-a-ceo-does.html">addressed in the post</a>, and I agree.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1486" title="three essentials" src="http://www.jonathannation.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/three-essentials-quotation.png" alt="" width="225" height="157" />Today I read <a href="http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/how-to-setup-a-niche-site/">a post on The Smart Passive Income Blog</a> about the starting out process Pat went through recently.</p>
<p>I have gone through and coached others through the same process, with some exceptions.</p>
<p>Here are some highlights:</p>
<h3><a href="http://nation.fm/dh"><strong>Dreamhost</strong></a></h3>
<p>Pat mentions <a href="http://nation.fm/bh">Bluehost</a>, many others rave about them too.</p>
<p>Long  ago I looked at all the options equivalent to those two. I read lots of  good and negative reviews of all the webhosting options.</p>
<p>Dreamhost  won me over with their Virtual Private Server (VPS  or <a href="http://www.nation.fm/dhvps">DreamhostPS</a>)  option they were developing. At that point I had played with Dreamhost, a  client was using them, and liked the systems, but the VPS option meant  to me -&gt; if the site gets too big for the shared server (the style  all those options are) &#8211; Dreamhost had an option I could turn on with a  press of a button and not have to move to another system manually.</p>
<p>Both  have great affiliate programs &#8211; all links to them should be assumed to  be my affiliate link &#8211; but that is also why they are raved about so  much.</p>
<h3>Plugins</h3>
<p>I  use <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/">Google XML Sitemaps</a> and a Google Analytics plugin, but I am  currently evaluating a couple and not sure which I will use moving  forward.</p>
<p><a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/">All  in One SEO Pack</a> is not needed in my case simply because I use  <a href="http://www.nation.fm/spress">StudioPress themes</a>, which have all the really good functionality built  into the themes.</p>
<p>There are some more plugins that are my standard, but this is not the section I really want to spend time on.</p>
<h3>Monetization?</h3>

The reason you go to a website, and return to the ones you do, is the content.</p>
<p>The  method for content development he is using is &#8211; Shared Journey. This is  similar to what <a href="http://gspn.tv">Cliff Ravenscraft</a> is doing with <a href="http://www.virtualassistantpodcast.com/">The Virtual Assistant  Podcast</a>, and many others.</p>
<p>The  general idea with Shared Journey is “I am on a journey to learn about  ABCD, as I travel, I am sharing what I learn with you.”</p>
<h3><strong>Lastly</strong></h3>
<p>I love this mindset:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today a copy of <a href="http://www.scoutingmagazine.org/">Scouting (magazine)</a> came in &amp; as I was flipping thought I pick up on this article titled &#8220;Mother of Inventing&#8221; in the What&#8217;s New area. (article not online yet)</p>

<p>It tells the story of how there use to be an Inventing MB &#8211; that 10 scouts earned before it went away.</p>
<p>Inventing MB is back and this time the Scouts don&#8217;t have to &#8220;apply for and receive a U.S. patent on an invention.&#8221;</p>
<p>Looking though <a href="http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/MeritBadges/mb-inventing.aspx">the requirements</a>, there is some basic knowledge, but what interests me are things like:</p>
<ul>
<li>Choose a commercially available product that you have used on an  overnight camping trip with your troop. Make recommendations for  improving the product, and make a sketch that shows your  recommendations.</li>
<li>Build a working prototype of the item you invented for requirement 6*. Test and evaluate the invention &#8211; [including] cost, usefulness, marketability, appearance, and  function. Describe how your original vision and expectations for your  invention are similar or dissimilar to the prototype you built.</li>
<li>Participate with a club or team (robotics team, science club, or engineering club) that builds a useful item.</li>
</ul>
<p>I am thrilled that the Boy Scouts of America is working towards helping those involved in scouting to go though the process of solving problems in the world around them.</p>

<p>I went to the site and they have this player:</p>

<p>In looking at it and listening to the songs, I wonder &#8211; is this the future of releasing a new CD?</p>
<p>A few features I picked up on:</p>
<ul>
<li>you can watch a music video</li>
<li>you can purchase thorough the widget</li>
<li>you can listen to the entire album (at least the standard version &#8211; there is a deluxe)</li>
<li>other info though the widget</li>
<li>easily share on other places, including social media networks</li>
</ul>
<p>Between sharing anywhere &amp; playing the entire album, this is pretty cool.</p>
<p>Not to mention, from the perspective of the band &#8211; they can always turn the widget off.</p>
<p>The other down side for people who might put this on their site is you are giving up some control of your site to some third party. If Newsboys (or really <a href="http://www.uniquestreak.com/">Unik</a> in this case) gets hacked, your site could then show stuff you really don&#8217;t want.</p>

Artie has realized that doing  one thing well pays off. This doesn’t mean you can’t shoot more than one  subject or style. It means you concentrate on one genre of photography.</p></blockquote>

<p>Not only for photographers,  but also pretty much anyone. Here is one more point:</p>

<div>5. <strong>They don’t wait for permission</strong>.  Unless you work for “the man,” you can’t afford to stand around and wait  for someone to tell you to go out and shoot. Pick up your camera, go  out and make images, show those images. It’s up to YOU to make something  happen. Don’t wait around for someone to tell you what to do. Do  SOMETHING and do it now.</div>

<p><span>Just doing what you do  best, are passionate about, and there is an economic engine that works  for you &#8211; is important.</span> Everyone needs practice.</p>
<p>Now  look at what I said that is different from the post.<br />
I said  &#8220;everyone&#8221;.</p>
<p>It does not matter if you work for &#8220;the man&#8221; or  not, you need to practice, improve, and increase your ability to  produce.</p>
<p>If <span>you are</span> working for &#8220;the man,&#8221; one thing that  can help you is to think of yourself as working for yourself and  contracting out your work to &#8220;the man.&#8221; <span>Ways</span> to  increase your skills, might be through training provided by &#8220;the man&#8221;,   podcasts, volunteering with a Scout program, <span>or even a part-time gig.</span></p>
<p>The key is what  he said &#8211; don&#8217;t wait for permission.</p>
<p>All the <a href="http://photofocus.com/2010/04/29/the-seven-habits-of-highly-effective-photographers/">seven habits for photographers</a> are  great &amp; I will be working to apply them to my life.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.podcampnashville.org/"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-790" title="podcampnashvillelogo" src="http://www.jonathannation.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/podcampnashvillelogo.png" alt="podcampnashvillelogo" width="307" height="150" /></a>Years ago I went to the <a href="http://www.mercylounge.com/">Mercy Lounge</a> one Saturday, not for a concert or drinks at the bar (though those were available), but for a time of meeting, learning, and socializing with people involved in or interested in Podcasting. It was an ok event, with one stage, and some break out areas. The best thing I took away from that day was meeting <a href="http://www.gspn.tv">Cliff Ravenscraft</a> in person for the first time and being able to get to know him.</p>
<p>The next year, around the same time, came PodcampNashville2, this time at the Vanderbilt Owen School. That year I <a href="http://www.jonathannation.com/2009/podcamp-nashville-thoughts/">live bloged some notes</a>. Lots of rooms, lots more people, lots more fun, and I did not make the mistake I had the first year &#8211; I stayed for the after party.</p>
<p>That fall I decided to go to <a href="http://www.barcampnashville.com/">BarCampNashville</a> &#8211; many of the same people *work* both events, but I picked up on something additional that applies to both events: most everyone at both events is interested in learning, helping people, building ventures (could be their own business, or their own department), and something involving either better communications or technology.</p>
<p>It was at Barcamp 2009 that I decided that I would just go ahead and start planning each year to be at each event (podcamp and barcamp Nashville) if not any other reason to support such a great community of people striving to grow themselves or a venture to help others.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll tell you more, and probably review some of my past notes (beyond <a href="http://www.jonathannation.com/2009/podcamp-nashville-thoughts/">any posts</a> I can find), but today I advise and encourage you to make plans to be at <a href="http://www.podcampnashville.org/">PodcampNashville</a>3.
